PayPal is on a mission to remake its data center. It’s taking it from a typical enterprise-style operation to a more agile, flexible one to better compete in offering payment methods on the Web.
Exactly what it’s doing in its data centers remains somewhat under wraps. PayPal isn’t eager to disclose too many details of its software infrastructure or its operations. But one thing is clear. BlackBerry can’t catch a break. The company had to abandon plans to launch BlackBerry Messenger for Android and iOS devices over the weekend after it ran into trouble with the rollout.
BlackBerry Messenger, more widely known as BBM, is BlackBerry’s proprietary instant messaging service. It is one of the most popular features of BlackBerry smartphones, as it powers device-to-device messaging without chewing up customers’ text messaging allotment. The push service includes read receipts and, with the new BlackBerry 10 operating system, offers screen sharing and voice/video chats, too.

Confession of a tech junkie: Some of the most fun I have each year is reading the essays companies submit for the InformationWeek 500 . (OK, make that the most fun at work .) These essays let me peek inside the heads of hundreds of IT leaders and see how they think they’re changing the world.
I can’t capture all that energy and insight here, but allow me to offer eight takeaways from those essays, as well as the IW 500 profiles written by my colleagues.

In my last column I discussed some of the limitations of cloud-based backup and why more cloud providers should provide some form of external, portable storage to overcome those challenges. I used tape technology as an example. The second and potentially larger problem with tapeless cloud backup is the recovery process. Vendors’ claims about the lack of tape value are getting out of hand.
