Amazon Outage Leaves Latency Mystery

The outage that beset Amazon.com’s retail home page lasted longer than some observers first believed. Reports have put the outage variously at 15 minutes, 25 minutes or “just under a half an hour,” as Forbes reported soon after the incident.

But in fact, it lasted 49 minutes, according to a monitoring service at Compuware, the owner of CloudSleuth cloud service monitoring and the Gomez Web application performance monitoring system, now part of the Compuware APM service. Despite inquiries, Amazon.com spokesmen have remained silent on the cause of the incident Monday and its duration. News reports have been sketchy.

Microsoft Patch Problems Underline Tradeoffs For Securing Systems

For many companies used to problem-free patching, August’s Black Tuesday–the second Tuesday of the month when Microsoft releases its latest security fixes–stands as a reminder that software systems are complex and patching software can lead to problems.

Companies that applied patches immediately may have lost the ability to search e-mail, had random crashes on Windows, or found that Active Directory’s federation services stopped working.

Google Glass To Arm Police, Firefighters

Google’s latest cautious moves on behalf of its computerized eyewear hasn’t matched the spectacle seen at the debut of Glass last year, as skydivers wearing the device descended on the company’s 2012 developer conference.

The company’s slow rollout to a few thousand developers has only just expanded, with early adopters now able to invite their friends to pay $ 1,500 for the opportunity to try a device that, in some form or another, will expand the way people think about mediated interaction and mobile technology.
