RainStor, which specializes in online data retention and retrieval, has tweaked its software for machine-generated data which, like the rest of the data universe, is expanding explosively. Using research from a recent Cisco study (Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast, 2010-2015), the company says that data traffic nearly tripled in 2010, making it three years in a row. This communications data includes call detail records, mobile web-browsing, text messages and essentially all mobile transactions that need to be retained for months and sometimes years. RainStor says that unlike traditional relational database technologies, its software (4.5) is designed to handle tens of billions of records per day and queries across trillion-record archives at significantly lower storage costs.
